The Peoples Democratic Party in Katsina yesterday staged a peaceful solidarity protest March to Katsina Police Headquarters to lay their complains against alleged ‘ police brutality’ in Ekiti state.
The party’s chairman Salisu Majigiri who led the march said the way and manner the police handled the situation should be condemned by all and sundry.
He said, man handling a sitting governor and his supporters is a bad omen and a signal to what the opposition should expect in the 2019 general elections saying that the police must be aware that the section 40 of the 1999 constitution guarantees right to peaceful assembly and association.
‘ we therefore feel dismayed and disheartened that such action is happening in our country. This is a threat to democracy, a threat to rule of law and a flagrant abuse of the Nigerian constitution’ he said
‘ if a sitting governor can be manhandled, then nobody is safe. The police that are suppose to be the protectors of lives and property are unfortunately being used as the originators of the violence’ he added.
